The younger brother of the Count of Maldoror, this film feels very much in line with that book, recommend reading it, it's very bizarre and Macabre. If it had a modern-day remake ignoring its 2 sequels, amplifying the 3rd act, and adding more ghostly apparitions into the mix then it would be a full-on 5/5. Coffin Joe is a very unique character though, so your enjoyment will depend on how much you become enchanted by his demented way of being.
Wow, what a picture. I'd long heard about the Coffin Joe series back when Cinemassacre first discussed it years ago but never experienced it until now. Brilliant doesn't cover it. It's a demented, twisted, darkly beautiful story of one man's depravity tearing everyone around him apart. Before himself. This film feels so ahead of it's time for 1964. That it's 60 years old and still hold up this well is a testament to all the talent that went into it. My ultimate review can be summed up by this: I loved this movie so much I went out and bought the expensive box-set Arrow released earlier this year.
not White Zombie but it works. I can't get past the cowardice of the men in this village; it jumps the shark once people start dying and they all just watch the same guy go full satanic over and over.
For the 1st 2/3rds of the film i couldn't wait for Coffin Joe to end. His violence and mockery of the common folk was just too sadistic for me to get behind, but that conclusion, wow!
