Revealed: The Artistry Behind THE FURIES’ Killer Practical FX

November 22, 2019

Last month, Shudder unveiled Australian slasher The Furies, a lean mean Shudder Exclusive that could be described as Friday the 13th meets The Hunger Games. If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the trailer:

Rebellious high school students Kayla (Airlie Dodds) and her best friend Maddie (Ebony Vagulans) find themselves abducted by a sinister presence and stalked, along with six other women, by men in terrifying masks.

The practical-effect heavy hit has been popular with Shudder gore hounds, notching a better than 4-out-of-5 rating from members. And there’s more going on here beyond mere mayhem, as the film’s Greek myth-inspired title suggests.

If the above trailer didn’t give you enough of a sense of what’s to come, here’s the “gloriously brutal” clip we shared with Bloody Disgusting:

The Furies recently had its Australian theatrical debut, and to mark the occasion, YouTuber Freakmo shared her amazing set visit video, complete with a closer look at just how the makeup FX team, led by Larry Van Duynhoven (whose many other credits include Lake Mungo and The Nightingale), pulled off some of their best gags. SPOILER WARNING—if you haven’t seen The Furies yet, go watch it now and then come back to see the artistry behind the mayhem.
