Unused Poster Concept Shows Joe Bob on the Iron Throne

August 21, 2019

If you’ve been digging the poster art for The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs, guess what: you’re a fan of the work of artist Justin Osbourn of Slasher Design.

But getting from concepts to key art is a journey—and sometimes the trip takes a few detours. One was this never-before-seen sketch for a concept we at Shudder pitched Justin, based on the original poster for Game of Thrones:

This rough sketch replaced the Iron Throne with Joe Bob’s signature longhorn lounger, and Ned Stark’s sword with a chainsaw, a nod to one of Joe Bob’s favorite films.

Had we kept going with this, Justin would have added more Briggs-ian accessories around the chair, and I’m pretty sure we would have seen Ernie, our very own Drive-In dragon, among them.

But Justin had an even better idea. Game of Thrones may be popular today, but the drive-in never dies, so why “bend the knee” to something that could might end up feeling dated?

So he came to us with this concept…

…and we never looked back.

And here’s the finished version, which blew us away. Gotta love those red chili pepper string lights!

T-shirts with Justin’s final design are available from Fright Rags.
