Dog Soldiers

Directed by Neil Marshall

Sergeant Harry Wells leads a team of British soldiers on a routine expedition to the Scottish Highlands. The six men would rather be at home watching a game, but they are even more dismayed when a carcass lands on their campfire. The next morning, they happen upon a severely injured Captain Richard Ryan and the bloody remains of his squadron.

A team of British soldiers encounter a vicious monster in this modern werewolf gem.

Cast: Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Emma Cleasby

What can I say? The werewolves were amazing, the story was great, and the acting was great. This is worth every minute.

Among the best of werewolf movies, along with Late Phases, Wolf, and Ginger Snaps.

Pretty much the best werewolf movie this side of American Werewolf in London, made for what was likely the catering budget of that film. The time spent developing the characters in the first act pays off big time when the movie shifts into an Aliens-esque "macho military team gets in over their heads" plot in the second. Characters behave believably and consistently even as the introduction of supernatural elements leaves plausibility far behind -- you may not believe that a werewolf could be real, but you believe how this character is acting when facing them. They even die in character! Proof that the good writing is the ultimate special effect.
