American Mary

American Mary

Directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska

Betrayed and brutalized by her professor, medical student Mary Mason’s life takes a surprising turn as she becomes a sawbones for the local mob after she stumbles into a seedy burlesque bar. Simultaneously ‘Bloody Mary’ becomes a hit in the body-modification underground after she helps a woman become the ultimate living doll. Before long Mary finds herself becoming increasingly unhinged as the operations pile up and the surgeries begin to leave more marks on her than clientele.

After an assault, medical student Mary Mason's life spirals out of control in this contemporary cult favorite.

Cast: Katharine Isabelle, Tristan Risk, Antonio Cupo, David Lovgren

Give me 20 more minutes, and this movie could have been amazing. But ultimately the ending falls flat and the story jumps around so much that it starts to feel disjointed. But the lead is great, the setting is great, it just fails to deliver on budget, runtime, and the ending where they really could have come up with something special. Overall, I can easily recommend it, even if it didn't entirely work for me.

Surprisingly good, low-budget movie. It's not very scary, but it's just weird enough (with enough surreal acting) to keep you engaged the whole time. Recommended if you can stomach body horror stuff.

Aside from Ginger Fitzgerald, this is my favorite role of Katherine Isabelle by far. It’s absolutely a revenge story at heart; similar to films like I Spit On Your Grave. Yet, this one was much easier to sit through from beginning to end. As much as I enjoyed this one, there are a few minor flaws that I got hung up on. There are points where the story feels disjointed, and some loose ends were left unresolved. The ending was anti-climactic, and yet the final shots of Mary are tragically beautiful, and appropriate for this story.
