I suppose it was controversial at the time, but it's just a bunch of T&A now and not much else. Sondra Locke and Colleen Camp are fun to watch but that's about it. The ending is just cheap.
Great, great movie, but one annoying trend I noticed in a lot of these early-mid 70’s gritty psychological thriller/horror films is the AWFUL soundtrack/score… And I’m not just talking about the “Good Old Dad” song. Throughout the film, the goofiest, most inappropriate music given the dark subject matter is peppered throughout. And I understand wanting to have a song like “Good Old Dad” as satire to contrast the dark themes, but play it at the beginning and the end alone and it would’ve been fine… Not constantly through the whole film. By the time it started playing when the girls are skipping down the street, I wanted to rip my hair out. Another perfect example of this horrible trend was Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left, except they doubled down on the stupid, atmosphere killing decisions and kept interjecting the terrible slapstick scenes with the two bumbling sherrif’s deputies… WHY!? Why did these otherwise groundbreaking directors think that was a good idea? If the goal is to contrast the disturbing ideas and scenes, there are much better choices than the overly obnoxious music they play overtop the Funniest Home Video montages where the footage is sped up to make people falling down “funnier”. I always skip past every scene with the cops when I watch Last House on the Left so as not to kill the pacing, but Death Game plays those annoying songs during important parts so you’re stuck with it. Also, I don’t mind the ending because it highlights the randomness of life, but I would’ve liked it better had the girls just completely escaped justice, leaving George to pay for his sins alone. But the ending as s it is really is growing on me, just not for the reason that they “didn’t get away with it”.
I've started watching this movie before, and quit. I made it through as a Last Drive-In feature. It's just a little too sleazy for me. I also quit Knock-Knock, the remake after just a bit as well. No denying the actors give quite the effort in this film.
Awesome 70's grindhouse flick. This is a batshit crazy home invasion movie with a pair of beauties in Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke. Don't miss it!
Fun movie to watch!
