Demonia

Directed by Lucio Fulci

In what fans consider his last great film, Godfather of Gore Lucio Fulci returns to the startling imagery and bloody excesses of his ‘70s/‘80s classics for an unholy saga of demonic nuns and supernatural carnage: When a Canadian archeological team excavates the ruins of a medieval Sicilian monastery, they unleash the vengeance of a crucified coven of satanic sisters with full-on Fulci fury.

This Lucio Fulci effort doesn't live in the same high-rent neighborhood as "The Beyond" or "Zombie", but it does exist just outside that sphere of influence. It begins with an opening sequence reminiscent of "The Beyond" with intensity and shock...and then kind of loses that manic fun for a fair bit of runtime. Things do pick up again as supernatural vengeance begins to increase the body count and there are some fun kills that if they aren't Fulci's most inspired still stand head and shoulders above most horror films. It possesses that same aura of doom and eerie malevolence that his best work has. The makeup effects work is good and admirable when you realize that makeup supplies like foam rubber and other materials that US artists take for granted was often hard to procure. It's a good movie and I was happy to finally get the chance to see it. This would be two-and-a-half skulls from me.
