Grabbers

Grabbers

Directed by Jon Wright

In this hilarious horror comedy that delighted midnight audiences at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, an Irish village throws a boozy blowout when aliens with an aversion to alcohol invade. After a local drunk survives an attack by a tentacled space monster, the town’s ecologist (LOOKING’s Russell Tovey) figures out liquor is toxic to the outer space octopi. To keep their town intact, they’ll have to get everyone rip-roaring drunk. But will being inebriated hurt their ability to fight the grabbers? Or is liquid courage exactly what everyone needs to survive?

I liked the concept, the acting was good, the effects were good, I would have preferred it to be a bit goofier, but the score was insanely annoying. It made the movie feel like something out of the late 80s, but not in a good way, it kept making me feel like I was watching "Batteries not included". I know that melodies get borrowed all the time, especially for old songs, but the regular melody that is in the whole score sounds like "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus" and I couldn't get that out of my head while I was watching it. Add that to the fact that the score is in nearly EVERY scene and it ruins most of the movie. So as cool monster shit is happening, you have "I saw mommy building Santa Claus" building triumphantly in the background. The forced romance didn't help, either. It just didn't feel needed. Lean into the comedy, ditch the unnecessary, awkward romance, fix the music and this would have been a killer B-movie.

This is one of my all time favorites. Funny, and suddenly touching, then absolutely ridiculous. A great thing to watch when you’re having a bad day. Accents are very thick, so subtitles may be needed.

A highly underrated horror-comedy. If you like Shaun of the Dead, check this one out!

Absolutely hilarious, but definitely more "sci fi comedy" than "horror comedy". That said, if that's what you're looking for, then this one is a blast!
