Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror

Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror

Directed by Xavier Burgin

Delving into a century of genre films that by turns utilized, caricatured, exploited, sidelined, and finally embraced them, Horror Noire traces the untold history of Black Americans in Hollywood through their connection to the horror genre. Adapting Robin Means Coleman’s seminal book, HORROR NOIRE will present the living and the dead, using new and archival interviews from scholars and creators; the voices who survived the genre’s past trends, to those shaping its future. A SHUDDER ORIGINAL.

HORROR NOIRE traces an untold history of Black Americans through their connection to the horror film genre.

Cast: Jordan Peele, Tananarive Due, Tony Todd, Ken Foree

A great exploration of history, sociology, and horror. The scholars were obviously passionate, and that is so key in keeping things gripping when you're not listening to the actors, writers, and directors. An absolutely fascinating watch, and led me to watch a few of the more obscure films on the list. Seriously though, kinda curious about what didn't make it in, as the third half felt very rushed. Thank goodness for the podcast.

this is fabulous. so many great contributors and useful insights. i really appreciate the critical lens- this is so much more nuanced than most documentary material you see on genre films. this is excellently paced, dense, and uses its time well, but i would happily have watched 10+ more hours of this!
