Night of the Living Dead
Directed by Tom Savini
In 1990, George Romero persuaded his friend and frequent collaborator, FX legend Tom Savini, to step into the director’s chair for this gory remake of 1968’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Romero wrote the script, keeping the original’s plot of a group of people trapped during a zombie outbreak, but updating other details. Patricia Tallman’s (“Babylon 5”) badass Barbara is nothing like Judith O’Dea’s hysterical original, while future CANDYMAN Tony Todd is brilliant as the heroic but frustrated Ben. But it’s Savini’s superb gore work that makes this one a must-watch.
FX legend Tom Savini directed this gory remake of the mother of all zombie flicks.
Cast: Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, William Butler, Tom Towles

Savini dabbles as director in a mostly faithful adaptation. There are genuine jump scares and a pulp terror with the addition of color. The soundtrack also is genuinely eerie. nHowever, the movie never transcends the original Night. Savini fails to capitalize on the social implications of Cold War America. Where Romero masterfully weaved in the turbulence of the Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movement, Savini goes on autopilot with not much more to say or do.
