Directed by Rainer Sarnet
In this folktale of love and survival in 19th century Estonia, peasant girl Liina longs for village boy Hans, but Hans is inexplicably infatuated by the visiting German baroness that possesses all that he longs for. For Liina, winning Hans’ requited love proves incredibly complicated in this dark, harsh landscape where spirits, werewolves, plagues, and the devil himself converge, where thievery is rampant, and where souls are highly regarded, but come quite cheap. With alluring black and white cinematography, Rainer Sarnet vividly captures these motley lives as they toil to exist—is existence worth anything if it lacks a soul?
Spirits, werewolves, plagues and the devil converge in this spellbinding folktale.

This is a beautiful movie! I like everything about it.
Gorgeous, strange, and entrancing.
I love folkflore and legend and this movie had it all. The first 10 minutes might possibly deter you but this film is so beautitul as it is about unrequited love. I definitely will watch it again. If you are looking for a film that will intrigue you and pull you in. This is it! Paganism and human interaction at it's best!
wtf? don't waste your time lol
Visually and aurally mesmerizing, albeit a little narratively inaccessible if you're not familiar with Estonian culture & folklore. If you are Estonian, I can imagine this film fires on all cylinders. Still, I would love to see what the filmmaker and the two young leads do next. And hey, can we get a Black Phillip & white plague goat crossover going while we're at it?
