Silent Hill

Silent Hill

Directed by Christophe Gans

Unable to accept the diagnosis that her daughter should be permanently institutionalized for psychiatric care, Rose flees with her child to the deserted town of Silent Hill in search for answers. It's soon clear this place is unlike anywhere she's ever been. It's smothered in fog, inhabited by strange beings and periodically overcome by a living "Darkness" that literally transforms everything it touches. Rose begins to learn the history of the eerie town and realizes that her daughter is just a pawn in a larger, terrifying game.

An abysmal film that had potential. The cast is adequate, and they do what they can, but the script is too mind-numbingly awful to keep the performances afloat. I was sure when it released that it would be an okay thing on its own, but likely miss the audiovisual splendor of the franchise. Instead, its soundtrack is almost entirely music from Akira Yamaoka's scores, and the visuals, despite not having aged especially well and relying way too much on CG, do a pretty decent job of conveying the franchise atmosphere. But the poor pacing, terrible script, middling performances, and reliance on wider horror cliches (that the games didn't actually suffer from, oddly) makes it a poor experience on the whole, whether you're an existing fan or not.

Movie was solid. I thought it was funny how they were running everywhere because that's basically what your doing in the game, so that gave me a good chuckle. I liked some of the original monster designs and apparently one of them that they were actually asked if the design could be used in a game. I just feel like if they had put that same creativity into a more original story in the world of Silent Hill then this movie would have done a lot better.

Completely underrated for its atmosphere and performances, this story of a woman’s desperate journey through hell-on-earth also features memorable creature designs and kill scenes. It’s a shame that it’s held back by a lackluster script that could have benefited from a second pass.

One of my favorite horror movies! Sure it's not a scene by scene remake of the game but it is close enough that it is an enjoyable watch every time!
