This is a sequel, not prequel, to Ringu. Ringu 2 is the other, reworked sequel. People say this is bad, but I disagree, it's just different from the Ringu movie. This one is closer to the story in the novel than Ringu 2 is, which is a new story that deviates less from the conclusions of the first Ringu movie. But if you really think about it, there's no reason to take the conclusion of the first Ringu as absolute fact, and I think this movie explains pretty well why we should question that. And Ringu 2 kind of just copies the original plot, while this movie expands on it. I mean maybe you could say it's convoluted, and same for the novels. Some later movies, including the prequel Ringu 0, actually do try to be inclusive of this film, so it's not exactly true that this is not "canon" in the world of Ringu films (and again it is in line with the novels and from what i can tell the tv shows). I guess it's more atmospheric, without jumpscares. It reminds me more of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's horror films, which I prefer to Ringu anyway. Yes, the ending doesn't make logical sense, but I guess you could see it as a metaphor rather than literal. The only problem is most of the sex scenes are cheesy and in turn so is Sadako as a femme fatale, but those are pretty small parts of the film. If you think about it, some parts of the original Ringu are cheesy too (especially the flashbacks imo).
