A nice surprise this movie, especially since I didn't think I would see Red Caps in this movie, which is a first for me. The story is not what I thought and I really liked the rise of emotion, until its final climax that I liked.
!!! Brilliant !!!
It was twisted but good
Two hours of the most whiny, useless main characters that I will never get back.
I have watched thousands of movies, some I have seen multiple times. When I say this movie is pretty dang good, its good and I am someone you can trust (especially if you appreciate these movies where its not filled with A or even B listers, but you recognize the actors and they do a good job). The acting honestly wasn’t too bad like some people below are stating. The red caps (leprechauns or fairies) are so stinking adorable! They are so ugly but so dang cute! I wanted to take one home. I didn’t expect to crack up laughing during this movie but some of the scenes with the red caps had me on the floor laughing. Their voices and one liners are the best. I really like Hannah John-Kamen (leading lady). Some people below said they hated the ending or that it was confusing…again when you watch as many movies as I have, you start to see the meanings behind every single movie, no matter how good or bad. The ending of this movie could have improved sure but I didn’t hate it. SPOILER!!! DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE WATCHED OR DON’T CARE ABOUT KNOWING PRIOR TO WATCHING!!! Okay I wanted you, so the ending to sum it up is basically the leading lady becoming Queen of the Fairies! Yay for Maya! It wasn’t confusing or stupid because I genuinely didn’t see it coming. I knew shed slaughter the old hag Queen but I expected a full Mother lifting a car off of her child battle to the death against the red caps. When she killed the Queen and they began to bow, I was ecstatic and felt like a kid at Disneyland and honestly kind of jealous she has a mini army for life. To those of you who I didn’t understand the ending…it’s very simple. Jamie, the Dad, failed at protecting his family. Not once, not twice, not even 3 times but 4 freaking times this dude couldn’t protect his wife and unborn/newborn child and every single time Maya had to put up one heck of a fight to survive! You know the old saying fool me once. Same applies. There’s a reason why I believe they went this way and had the woman emerge above douchey Jamie. Had they of had Jamie all of the sudden grow a pair at the end would’ve been out of character tear for him. For those who said she just flips characters…dude were we watching the same movie?! She doesn’t just “flip”. The movie literally shows her going through one battle after another, each more horrifying and harder than the previous. First the break in, she had to hold them off with a knife, the police scared them away. Then it escalated to her almost being raped by Doofy the giant Lumberjack. She this time pleaded for help (to be saved by someone) and unknowingly made a pact with them and traded her safety for her first born daughter (literally Rumpelstiltskin duh, and wasn’t Rumpel magical and fugly just like the red caps?!) starting to make more sense now huh? Then the battle with the Whelans. This time Maya is fighting and defending herself as best as her 9 month pregnant tush can. She sure does put up a fight and then like a freaking savage bends over and delivers her baby like in the old days. Raw, beast like and you could see the ring of fire in her expressions. Don’t tell me her acting was bad because it wasn’t. Lastly, her baby girl gets stolen by the Rumpel wannabes and she goes full force Mom lifting car off of baby because her weak, crusty butt husband is listening to the weeniest tape on trauma while he dry heaves at the sight of some blood. And his acting…was also good. I really believed he was a pathetic, weak, annoying weeny. Exactly what his character is supposed to be. Maya rescues her daughter, slays the Queen and then ta-da becomes the Queen and a Mother and a Hero all in one fell swoop. The ending was phenomenal because it undeniably embodies what a woman goes through. That is the methaphor/meaning/whatever you want to refer to it as. It also is defining pregnancy from beginning to end. First trimester you’re weak, scared, in protection mode, don’t fight because you don’t want to risk miscarriage. Second trimester is a struggle, hardships happen, you feel like you’re losing your mind, 3rd trimester, nesting, ready for the big battle, your life is literally about to change forever after this is done. Exactly what happens after the 3rd battle for Maya with the Whelans. After birth is the Momma bear, no one will hurt my baby, it’s not just you that you have to worry about, will literally KILL for your child’s safety and well being. End of all of that is the greatest reward…you get to rule. Maya became Queen and it symbolized the end of her battles because now she wasn’t alone anymore. Clearly Jamie never grew to greatness and with respect, no man ever does compared to their wife when it comes to having a child. The woman does ALLLLLLL of the work during and after pregnancy. Even if the husband is amazing (like mine) and helps as much as possible, guess what? Still majorly on the women especially and entirely during the whole 10 months of pregnancy. The ending symbolized Maya never having to worry again, never having to fear, never having to leave food out because the wall comes down and the red caps and humans have united. So no to some of your guys questions of is she living in the woods now…gah…no dude she’s not living in the woods. Her being Queen, being strong, its a mutually beneficial relationship which is why the rep caps where so happy and thrilled and laughing and dancing. They just upgraded majorly. They went from a lazy, obese, boobs drooping and too big to stand, missing tooth, incest, hillbilly Queen who clearly has never left that tree trunk burrow and definitely doesn’t protect and feed and care for her kingdom…to a beautiful, strong, ruthless Queen who feeds them, will protect them, fight for them and with them. Like how did no body understand this ending and everything that happened in this movie?! Blows my mind. Sorry for the novel…to sum it all up…the movie was fantastic, way better than expected, WORTH the watch.
