Magic

Magic

Directed by Richard Attenborough

Anthony Hopkins plays a ventriloquist whose dummy has a murderous mind of its own in this chilling psychological horror film written by legendary Hollywood scribe William Goldman (MISERY, MARATHON MAN) and directed by future Oscar-winner Richard Attenborough (GANDHI). Famous for its trailer ("Magic is fun. When you're dead!") which supposedly was removed from TV for being too scary, MAGIC still holds up as a terrifying trip to the Twilight Zone. Fans of Hopkins' iconic turn as Hannibal Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS should be sure to experience MAGIC.

Wanted to like it but it was really slow and boring, non of the characters were captivating. A dread to watch.

My first time seeing this I thought it was great Anthony Hopkins was amazing in it , this movie is a classic. It had a better story than I anticipated but it was well done with good characters, the entire movie had alot of build up to get to a very sad ending that broke my heart , fats is awesome too. Five skulls.

I'll always be grateful to my mother for taking me to the movies on a regular basis growing up. She loves films and as a single mother wound up taking me to lots of frightening and adult fare that was unsuitable for most children my age, but I'll always treasure her for igniting my love for movies and horror in particular. She took me to see "Magic" back in 1978 and I hadn't revisited it until now. It's just as good and chilling as I remember. The foundation is laid from the start with terrific professionals behind the camera like William Goldman and David Attenborough and a great cast from top to bottom. Anthony Hopkins finely draws his character Charles "Corky" Withers as a nervous nebbish that at first just seems to fear success and uses performance to mask crippling shyness, but as the layers peel back he reveals a darker, disturbed personality trapped in his painful past and willing to lash out at anyone that pries too closely into it. This is prime psychological horror that excels in every department. It's certainly my choice of the best example of a film using a ventriloquist dummy to generate dread out of the handful that have attempted it. The design of Fats rides the line of a doll that can look humorous but can also appear malevolent. It has a great story that comes to a dark, shattering climax. Look out for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment with Fats that will have you wondering afterwards if what's happening has implications beyond everyday reality. This is a highly recommended treat.
