Sun Choke

Sun Choke

Directed by Ben Cresciman

In a Hollywood mansion, Janie (Sarah Hagan, “Freaks and Geeks”) is being nursed back to health by her nanny Irma (horror icon Barbara Crampton), who makes Janie do bizarre rituals to cure her after a breakdown. When Janie becomes obsessed with a woman named Savannah, and begins stalking the innocent stranger, it falls to Irma to get Janie back under control. But Janie thinks she knows what’s best for Janie. Mysterious, unsettling, and brilliantly acted, SUN CHOKE is a standout in the wave of excellent recent horror films about disturbed women, including SHE WOLF and SHREW’S NEST. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE. Contains strong language, sexual scenes, violence and gore.

A disturbed young woman named Janie is looked after by a domineering nanny who claims she is trying to make her well.

Cast: Sarah Hagan, Sara Malakul Lane, Barbara Crampton

Sun Choke is a film that felt like mental exercise. Wonderfully acted (especially with the ever-brilliant Barbara Crampton) and artistically lit and shot, the hurdles this film forces you to jump are its plot, runtime, and symbolic meaning. It’s a confusing, warped look into the mind of a mentally ill woman, but the plot’s suggestion of symbolism (being sick of existing after trauma, and wanting to “choke” out your life (“sun”)) runs a little too deeply for me. The story alone was interesting, and a faster pace would have served it well. Whilst the performances were great, it was a bit too arthouse for my tastes. Only suggested if you like a movie that makes you think and leaves you without answers.

at a point seemingly hours in to this film the abductee says to the abductor (names would be pointless) " I think I know what you want",well that made one of us. I'm again in the minority, this is yet another offering in which many other viewers find merit, much like the previous film I endured,'Eight Eyes',I found this a vapid experience. I don't need,or expect,to be spoon-fed meaning in my films, but the usp of this seemed to be a tuning fork🤔 Even the presence of Babs Crampton couldn't raise this nonsense to a satisfactory level for me. It's only scraped 2 skulls because at least it LOOKS ok.
